A Study to understand the impact of COVID-19 on Software Engineers by Haystack found 81% of developers are saying covid has increased burnout.

83% of Software Engineers reported feelings of burnout, that’s 4 out of 5 developers, the main reasons were

  • 40% said burnout was due to high workload
  • 31% inefficient processes
  • 29% unclear goals and targets

Whilst many developers are struggling with increased workloads, Covid has meant they have had to cope without the support from colleagues, family and friends.

What is burnout?

This article defines burnout

“Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest and motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place”

Burnout isn’t a medical condition but a mixture of stress, emotions, and physical tiredness. Burnout occurs when you are exhausted mentally , physically, and emotionally. Work applies constant stress to the person who gets the feeling they cannot get a head or complete all their work.

Burnout occurs not because of one event but a wearing down of the person with persistent pressure. STRESS AND THE GLASS OF WATER.
